Family, friends and communal leaders had gathered together to bid ‘Farewell’ to Fred and Della who have now made permanent aliyah in Israel In a speech laced with wit, Lord Sacks praised Fred’s vision which was the hallmark of all that he had accomplished in Maccabi and the World Maccabiah. In particular, he referred to his extraordinary contribution to so many aspects of B’nai B’rith – Hillel, Housing, the Presidency of the then District 15 (when we had 6000 paying members!) and B’nai B’rith International, on which he had served as Senior International Vice President. In Israel, inter alia, he has been involved with the B’nai B’rith World Centre, the B’nai B’rith Bridge in Jerusalem and, as a great supporter of the arts, the Israel Museum. In conclusion, leaving the best till last, the Chief Rabbi declared, “South Africa has its World Cup and Mandela; Fred has a Kiddush Cup and Della!” We send our very best wishes to Fred and Della on their ‘retirement’ and thank them for their imaginative and enduring contribution to B’nai Br’ith and the general community. |
