hhhhhaiti.jpgB'nai B'rith joins the world effort and mourns the loss of an estimated 100,000 lives. Those who have survived desperately need our assistance.

Donations to the fund support an emergency response team from IsraAID (The Israel Forum for International Humanitarian Aid), of which B'nai B'rith is a founding member. B'nai B'rith World Centre Director Alan Schneider is part of the team, which is composed of the experts of F.I.R.S.T. (Fast Israeli Rescue and Search Team), including recovery and logistics experts and medical personnel. B'nai B'rith is proud to continue to be an active partner in this program.

All donations received will be matched by donations from BBUK central funds.

BBUK National President Martin Kudlick with Leo Baeck Lodge President Richard Fisher
A capacity crowd packed into Leo Baeck's community hall for a reception to honour long-serving Lodge President Richard Fisher, who  recently celebrated his 90th birthday. However, the focus was not entirely on age with  youth providing an appropriate balance as three young people from BBYO: Director of Leadership and Development Mikey Harris, Director of Education Ruthie Newman and National Welfare Officer Louis Trup gave an audio-visual presentation of the aims, objects and achievements of BBYO, impressing everyone with their enthusiasm and ability.

B'nai B'rith Frankfurt Lodge celebrate 120th anniversary

Delegates at the special Frankfurt Lodge meeting at which 14 new young members were installed.A simultaneous translation into English was provided - hence the headphones
Jews traditionally wish one another to live "until 120" This is because the Torah tells us that Moses was 120 years old when he died and his life was deemed perfect and complete.

The Frankfurt Schönstädt Lodge achieved this venerable age last year and celebrated their long and distinguished history with a December weekend of memorable events at which Tony and I were privileged to be present. After the close of Shabbat a special meeting of the Lodge was held at which 14 new young members were formally installed. The Frankfurt Lodge has for some time been nurturing and supporting its young people, many of who come from the former Soviet Union and organise their own activities relevant to their interests. The induction ceremony included a fascinating explanation of the original ‘Masonic’ type signs and gestures used on formal B’nai B’rith occasions – something not previously experienced by the BBUK visitors.

Making friends in London's diplomatic community

mark for web.jpgAn often asked question - what’s in it for them? First of all, who is them? I refer to the London based diplomats, whom we visit and who are happy to receive us on a regular basis, to discuss issues of mutual concern in the International field in general and the Middle East in particular. So why are they willing to have us visit - and revisit?

Brass Tacks at Bushey for SAUL's Cyril Trup Memorial Lecture
Written by Wally Leaf

From l to r: Mrs Hilary Brass, Judge Laurence Brass Lodge President Joella Leaf, former Mayor of Hertsmere Cllr Sandra Parnell and organiser Wally Leaf
Many who applied too late for seats were unfortunate not to be able to join the capacity B’nai B’rith audience at Bushey Country Club for the annual Cyril Trup Memorial Lecture, delivered by the 2009 Speaker of the Year, Judge Laurence Brass,  and presented, as always, by Shlomo Argov Unity Lodge, whose President, Joella Leaf, was in the chair.  I had persuaded my very busy friend, the judge, over a convivial lunch at a restaurant in that very same Bushey many months before, to keep the date open.  No mean achievement in view of the state of his appointments calendar but, in addition to Cyril’s reputation in the community as a highly respected and extremely active member of Shlomo Argov Lodge, and as Vice-President of B’nai B’rith UK, at the time of his tragic death in a car accident some five years ago, coincidence also played its part in my success.
